At WIS we view Kindergarten as an essential step in ensuring that children are well prepared for the learning that takes place in Grade One.  Our one-year Kindergarten program is designed to develop in students the necessary academic skills, behavioral habits, and abilities to focus and concentrate – all essential skills for success in elementary school.

Our Kindergarten program empowers students with a balanced classroom experience that includes the intellectual stimulation necessary to develop knowledge, interest and focus, physical activity to develop healthy bodies, and purposeful playtime to develop curiosity, imagination, and social skills.

Our intensive English language learning provides Kindergarten students with a strong foundation in English language when they enter Grade One.  In Kindergarten, they master phonics and study sight words, the essential fundamentals for English reading and writing.  We begin leveled reading in Kindergarten to allow each student to progress to the best of his/her abilities, and our students learn to write letters and words and create short sentences in print.

In our vibrant Chinese language and culture program, we combine theme-based teaching with the study of Chinese cultural traditions and Chinese characters - plus a dash of Tang Dynasty poetry!  Our goal is for students to master good communication and presentation skills, learn the Chinese characters necessary for future Chinese reading and writing, and gain a deep appreciation for Chinese culture.

We take a concrete approach to math learning and emphasize computation and math logic rather than abstract concepts in math.  Given the rigor of the WIS elementary math program, math is an important area of focus for us and, in addition to designated "math time", math is integrated throughout the day through the use of math storybooks and math games.

Physical education and the arts are essential to building healthy bodies and creative minds.  Taught by our experienced international teaching staff, P.E., music, and art are taught in English, assimilating casual language practice in fun.

Making connections between classroom learning and the world around them is important for even our youngest students.  Our monthly field trips to important cultural sites in Hangzhou and our celebrations of both Chinese and Western festivals and holidays provide an additional level of learning enrichment for our Kindergarten students.
