Foundation Projects
年度亮点回顾
At Wahaha International School, learning extends well beyond a strong foundation of Core Courses and Extension Courses. Woven into the curriculum is a distinctive series of Foundation Projects, made possible with the generous support of thes 3J Education Foundation — programs shaped by passion, expertise, and educational vision.
These boundary-breaking initiatives are not the result of momentary inspiration. They are deeply rooted in the WIS academic team’s rich and diverse academic backgrounds, as well as their sustained commitment to professional excellence and reflective practice.
Drawing on their areas of expertise and driven by a spirit of educational innovation, our teachers invite students to move beyond textbooks and traditional classrooms, opening the door to new learning contexts and exploring fields of knowledge that inspire curiosity, creativity, and possibility.
WIS Music Talented Development Programme offers diverse opportunities for students to explore and grow through performance, creativity, and collaboration.
This semester, this programme focused on three core programs—Orff Ensemble, WIS Youth Choir, and Band—aiming to strengthen students’ musical foundations while expanding authentic performance experiences.
In the Orff Ensemble program, students learned to play xylophones, touch bells, and a variety of percussion instruments, developing the ability to read simple rhythms and notation while building ensemble skills and teamwork.
The WIS Youth Choir and Band were actively involved in a wide range of performance platforms, including school Christmas celebrations, external hotel tree-lighting ceremonies, and performances for the school’s Winter Show theme song and official MV recording.
Looking ahead to next semester, the Foundation Project will place greater emphasis on artistic expression and performance quality.
The Orff Ensemble will work towards rehearsing stage-ready repertoire. The WIS Youth Choir plans to produce a professionally recorded studio MV and prepare for the Music Showcase, and the Band will continue to expand its performance platforms through events such as International Day, supporting students in becoming confident and expressive young musicians.
The WIS Chinese Culture Course, developed and initiated by the WIS Chinese team, integrates engaging traditional Chinese cultural knowledge and delivers a fascinating, culturally rich learning experience to our students.
To materialize the school’s Chinese cultural heritage and bring fun and a sense of honor to students, a Dragon & Lion Dance Team was established in the PYP, aligned with the G3 UOI unit “Folk Traditions” where students study its historical evolution and artistic expressions through the Pocket Handbook of Chinese Classics, followed by rehearsals and performances at events like Chinese New Year Celebrations and International Day, with G4 students able to continue participating based on interest.
Additionally, the PYP “Chinese Ceramics · Liangzhu Pottery” Series constructs project-based courses from Grades 1 to 5 around ceramics and Liangzhu Civilization.
While the Calligraphy Elective teaches MYP students the art of Chinese characters with brush techniques that go beyond simple writing, helping them understand the long cultural context carried by each character.
The Journey Afar project is a Chinese critical thinking system developed by WIS, combining drama classes, student debate clubs, and competition platforms to systematically cultivate students’ critical thinking, communication skills, and teamwork.
In the summer of 2025, student representatives from our school’s Debate Club took part in the Global Youth Chinese Debate Tournament under the guidance of Ms. Alicia and Ms. Bessie.
They demonstrated excellent collaboration, critical thinking and reflective abilities during the intensive schedule, and won the fourth place in Group C and the “Jury Recommendation Special Award” with their calm and in-depth performance.
During the same period, our teachers participated in a critical thinking education forum, where Ms. Bessie shared the school’s Drama-based Critical Thinking Programme and debate framework, and Ms. Mona and Ms. Cecilia contributed to professional discussions. Through participation in both competitions and forums, the school continues to strengthen its learner-centred approach to critical thinking education and support the growth of both students and teachers.
Additionally, the WIS Chinese Debate Team delivered an interactive Chinese debate demonstration at the Winter Show.
Last week, they competed in a thrilling friendly match against BASIS International School. Meanwhile, a group of outstanding new team members who joined this semester are actively engaged in preparatory courses.
The Drama Critical Thinking course is designed for WIS G3–G4 students and uses original dramatic scenarios to integrate critical thinking, communication skills, and emotional experience.
This semester focused on human issues in the digital age, with students exploring ideas through discussion and reasoning, culminating in the final performance The Moon Planet Assault Case.
On stage, students stepped into the perspectives of victims, perpetrators, and bystanders, using logic and empathy to present the complexity of the issue.
Parents widely commented that it was “a course children want to take again”, noting clear growth in their children’s thinking skills and being impressed by their mature and powerful performances.
The Digital Maker Lab is a school-based specialized program that integrates STEAM education concepts, with project-based learning at its core, aiming to cultivate students’ computational thinking, innovative abilities, and engineering literacy.
The curriculum covers cutting-edge maker technologies such as Dash robot programming, Laser Cutting, 3D Printing, and Turtle Car programming, enabling students to acquire digital design and manufacturing skills through hands-on practice.
In different grades, students have different learning focuses and challenges: G3 students explored paper circuits and integrated their learning into the UOI Community Project, adding motors, LEDs, and buzzers to make their models interactive.
G4 students took on the challenge of designing and building their own pinball machines, combining with the UOI theme “Inventions and discoveries change the world”.
G5 students explored laser cutting technology, applying their skills to design rock display boxes and creating personalized works in their spare time, integrating scientific inquiry with digital fabrication.
These foundation projects, rooted in passion and professionalism, have opened up a new world of exploratory learning for WIS students, empowering them to grow into comprehensive and creative individuals.
