Spark! WIS Science & Art and Design Fair
Summer always holds delightful surprises. At the end of...
In the gentle breeze of early summer, WIS Grade 5 students presented a captivating PYP Exhibition, marking the culmination of their primary years.
As the capstone project of the Primary Years Programme, G5 students have taken the lead in exploring real-world issues that matter to them. From formulating meaningful questions to conducting in-depth research and sharing their findings with the community, they’ve shown what it means to be inquirers, thinkers, and caring global citizens.

Diverse Themes,
Flexible Inquiry:
A Multifaceted World in PYPX
“The exhibition is a culmination of the Grade 5 students learning over the past five years. What’s different this year is that we open all the transdisciplinary themes for students to enhance their creativity and exploration. Some topics that the students decided to explore this year were fashion and how fashion enhances self-expression and renewable energy, animal conservation, ancient civilizations and role models, inventions and AI.”
———Ms. Charne, PYPX Leader
This year’s graduation exhibition at WIS highlighted the diversity of themes, allowing students to freely choose rich transdisciplinary topics and form self-directed teams to conduct research.
In their imaginative and diverse research directions, historical and cultural topics emerged as one of the most popular themes this year.
A group exploring Innovative Inventions in Ancient Civilizations presented ancient innovations in architecture, machinery, and tools through text and visuals (e.g., the Four Great Inventions, irrigation systems, Roman roads), while also analyzing their historical context, functions, and how they propelled modern technological and societal development.
Other students focused on Beijing Opera: A Treasure of Chinese Traditional Culture, systematically introducing its historical origins, character classifications, vocal styles, and unique performance techniques. They also discussed the challenges and modern dissemination strategies for this art form in today’s society.
Some students delved into Historical Figures
and role models in China, investigating prominent individuals like Yuan Longping and Deng Xiaoping to reveal how their actions and ideas have shaped modern China.
Beyond history and culture, many students focused on natural sciences under the transdisciplinary theme of Sharing the Planet —covering topics such as renewable energy, environmental awareness, and wildlife conservation.
Two teams focused on Renewable Energy, introducing solar power, hydroelectricity, ocean energy, and geothermal energy and they constructed amazing models to show case these energy sources. They analyzed the environmental and social impacts of these energy sources and explored innovative approaches and challenges in transitioning to renewable energy.
In the topic Wildlife, students studied animal behavior and sustainable tourism as a way to raise awareness and promote ecological harmony.
Humanities and arts were introduced as a brand-new topic for the first time. Two groups, titled Artistic Creativity Can Change People’s Imagination and Emotion and Fashion and How Fashion Enhances Self-Expression, explored the creative processes of art and fashion, as well as their influence on emotions and imagination, demonstrating the profound impact of art.
Some students addressed Gender Stereotypes, investigating societal fixed notions about the behaviors, roles, and capabilities of men and women. They revealed how these stereotypes limit individual opportunities and perpetuate unfair treatment, while proposing solutions to challenge these norms.
In Humanity and the World, students encouraged global citizenship and responsibility through interdisciplinary actions like environmental campaigns and social innovation.
This vibrant exhibition not only captured the world through students’ eyes—it offered a glimpse into the future they hope to build.

Home-School Collaboration:
A True Journey of Discovery
“So this year with the exhibition, we really tried to focus on the process rather than just the end product, which is the exhibition itself. And keeping this in mind, we invited parents during the whole process, throughout the 7 or 8 weeks at different intervals to really come and see and experience the hard work the children are putting into this and to see the development of their progress over these stages. Hence our theme for this year. It’s a true journey of discovery. ”
———Ms. Reinette, PYP Coordinator
This year’s PYPX at WIS was truly a journey of discovery—of knowledge, collaboration, and personal growth.
Over the course of 7 to 8 weeks, with the guidance of teacher-mentors, students planned, researched, collaborated, and created their final exhibitions.
What made this journey even more meaningful was the active involvement of parents.
✦
From helping students refine questions and design surveys to assisting in exhibition setup, parents played an integral role.

A New Chapter Begins
The Primary Years Programme Exhibition is more than a presentation—it’s a celebration of curiosity, courage and growth.
In this exhibition brimming with wisdom and passion, WIS Grade 5 graduates have not only demonstrated the achievements of their five-year learning journey but also lived out the core values of IB learners. They observe the world with curiosity, analyze problems with critical thinking, connect with others through empathy, and respond to societal needs with responsibility.
At this moment, they have successfully completed their PYP journey of exploration! May you carry forward this spirit of inquiry, the courage to question, and the ability to solve problems as you step into the new MYP phase of learning.
