In 4th Grade we are working on a fun IB interdisciplinary unit which includes: English, Social Studies, Music, Writing, and Math, along with lots of creativity and hard work! Our class investigated many types of governments around the world and then voted on the type of government that will rule our mini-society. They also looked at flags around the world and each student submitted designs for our society flag. We also voted on a name for society, which is now called “Peppyland” and have created a currency for our society as well. In music class, Miss Linsey has worked with our class to create a national anthem, after studying anthems and the symbolism and language of anthems around the world.
A very exciting part of our mini-society is that the students have created businesses and have learned about being an entrepreneur in Peppyland. We have had three sales so far and next week we will meet with 5th grade who is doing a similar unit. Our two societies will meet and will learn about currency exchange rates and be able to compare business tips and ideas with each other.
Our class has worked on persuasive writing during this unit, and has had many great debates sharing their opinions about rules and laws that we should put into place in our society. I have been impressed at how the IB Learner Profile traits have become very visible as students are working to be responsible, communicators and risk-takers in our mini-society!
