In English class 5th Graders had the opportunity to work with some of the middle school students in book club groups as they read the book Holes. It was a great way for the students to not only work with another age group but to encourage practicing language skills as they discussed the book. It was great seeing some of the aha moments as they made connections to the story. Some of the highlights of the discussions were: Can we control our destiny? Keeping our promise. Decisions we make can affect others. Caring for others. They culminated the reading by choosing projects from Bloom’s Taxonomy which required writing, creating new ideas, drawing, making conclusions and we are currently watching the movie version of the text. In addition, the students read a short story by O Henry both in Chinese and English class. It was a story that dealt with irony. We learned about the three types of irony. We were able to make that connection to the book Holes. Now they will be paying attention to how irony is all around us!
