Grade 8 students each designed a river valley contour map for the purpose of dam construction, watershed analysis and flood control. The learning objective is for them to turn the 2D map into a 3D model to test their design and theory. The next step will be to cover the 3D map that they have created with a waterproof substance and then construct a dam to determine the success of their design. This is to prepare the students for a prospective trip to Three Gorges Dam. The prospective field trip will allow the students to experience first hand and gather personal as well as expert testimony on engineering, design, construction and the production of electricity.
